Buy in Bulk-With Friends

Postby GettingTight on Tue Jan 06, 2009 12:51 am

There used to be a charge on the Matalan card, so we would always go together with friends to shop there. They removed the charge eventually so we just go when we feel like it now.

But is there anywhere else that the bulk buying or club card type things might still help us see savings in the UK?

Have you tried forming a co-op with friends. A community I know has formed their own co-op that buys in bulk and all the members take turns dividing the food. They even buy wheels of cheese and cut it themselves. It saves a lot of money and helps everyone. I even know one doctor that has joined just to save some money. Sounds like a smashing idea but it takes quite a few members in order to get the best buys.

Two of my neighbours started a co-op of sorts in our street. I've been a part of their group almost a year now and it's really noticeable that my food shopping bills have dropped a lot since then.

This looked like an interesting resource:

I think co-ops. large or small, are a huge help, not only to my budget, but for the local farmers as well. The food is usually better for you anyway.

And it gives a great community feel to your shopping, don't you think? Doing something with your neighbors... we tend to get away from that too much nowadays.
